The advanced stage of the bioethanol production in Brazil calls for the creation of a tool to allow the evaluation of the new technologies under development regarding their sustainability and comparing them with processes under operation in ethanol and sugar mills that use sugarcane as raw material. This reality induced Bioethanol Science and Technology Center (CTBE) to present a program that, based on modern mathematical modeling, simulation and process integration techniques, will construct a biorefinery model, able to assess and virtually compare the commercially consolidated proposals with the ones under development in laboratories and pilot plants. It will be possible to assess the success level already attained by new technologies under development, once the virtual biorefinery has been constructed.

In this Workshop, CTBE is willing to discuss and evaluate the proposal for the construction of the Virtual Sugarcane Biorefinery (VSB) and the methodology to be applied and discuss and start-up the construction process of a Mathematical Modeling and Simulation Net. This Net will aggregate and organize the work of several research institutions and companies with know-how in this area which want to be part of this development.

To achieve the expected results with the Virtual Biorefinery, is essential to overcome the following challenges – among others:

• definition of default units, considering different production chains;
• construction of data bases supported by real industrial data;
• establishment of a simulation platform for the assessment of economic, environmental and social impacts of the studied alternatives;
• construction of mathematical models of the considered operation units and processes;
• development of optimization strategies to be implemented;
• validation of the results (comparison of different technological alternatives, technology optimization and success level of technology development) obtained using the VSB.

At the end of this Workshop, CTBE wishes to have validated the Virtual Sugarcane Biorefinery Program, along with its methodology, as well as get started on the construction of the Mathematical Modeling and Simulation Net which are essential for the success of the Program.

Professionals with different expertise, such as sustainability indicators and ethanol production process development, among others, are welcome to participate in this event.
